Coconut rhinoceros beetle threatens palm trees and Solomon Islanders' livelihood

Solomon Islanders are facing a bleak future as the coconut rhinoceros beetle marches across its fertile plains, killing their "tree of life" by the millions

But these Pacific islanders do not rely on the ubiquitous fruit just for nutrition — the coconuts supply the palms' valuable cash crops of oil and copra, while the tree is also used for building and making essential household goods.

The coconut rhinoceros beetle has already browned-off the verdant landscape around the capital, Honiara.

Over the past three years, it has ferociously attacked the massive plantations of Guadalcanal Plains Palm Oil Limited (GPPOL), east of the city. Its general manager Craig Gibsone fears for future.

Talofa lava to all the rhinoceros beetle rebels ,

We hope this spp./biotype will not be arriving soon in Samoa.

The most relevant mechanism of control is field collection going together with the legislation. MAF and the communities doing field collection together and then MAF to make and enforce the law. Field collections has to be done regularly all throughout the year. Pheromone traps can also be used and so do the biological control agents if possible

If we kill the eggs, larvae and pupae on the ground (through field collection), the adults won’t emerge and fly out to do the damage.

Sanitation of breeding sites is very important and the legislation is very much deal with this.

Anyway… lets all work together in controlling this pest.

Its sad to note the severity of the rhinoceros beetle in the islands.. A good strain of Metarhizium anisopliae can do miracles as we observed in India.

Thank you, Kalidas, but can you provide information on the suppliers of the Metarhyzium used in India we would like to test it on our strain of beetle.

Best regards
