Worldwide distribution. On cucumber and tomato as the cause of a major disease; a minor disease on many others. On papaya, occasional loss of fruit yield and quality.
Spots, angular, brown, 2 mm with yellow halos and white centres that often fall out. Best seen from below. May become larger and merge in wet weather. Spread is by spores in wind and rain.
Cultural control: none recommended for papaya, but it is recommended not to plant tomato or cucumber near papaya with brown leaf spot.
Chemical control: chlorothalonil, mancozeb, or copper. Note, tebuconazole is used for black spot.
