The Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor) is a major pest of wheat around the world. A new guide in the open-access Journal of Integrated Pest Managementoutlines the fly’s biology and life cycle and an array of tactics that can be combined to manage the pest. (Photo credit: Scott Bauer, USDA Agricultural Research Service, Bugwood.org) The Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor) lays its eggs in the grooves on the upper side of a wheat plant leaf (A). Larvae move toward the base of the plant and feed on the stem (B). The pupal stage (C) is often called the “flax seed stage,” due to the puparium’s resemblance to a flax seed. land; it can degrade what was once suitable land for farming purposes, resulting in major economic losses to smallholder farmers. If left unmanaged this weed can cause crop yield losses of up to 95%, with what little is successfully harvested potentially being of much less commercial value due to contamination. Parthenium is toxic to animals and humans when consumed in high enough quantities (© CABI)
