Request for identification: distorted banana leaf - Nigeria
Dear All,

This was observed on plantain in a farmer's field. It affects mostly the 2-4th leaves after the cigar leaf.

It was not insect defoliation.

Any possible cause?

Thank you.

Hi, I like to inform you that I have seen the same symptoms on bananas  in Pohnpei Federated States on Micronesia. There were only very few bananas showing this symptoms. I think I have sent a message about this the banana symptoms to pestnet several years ago.Kind regards,Konrad

Dear Dr Khazeem

I tried to look for the photos from Pohnpei that Konrad referred to, but failed to find them. As you know somaclonal variation is common in banana, particularly those from tissue culture: mutations occur spontaneously, and probably do so in the field as well. If you say this is not due to insects damaging the leaves, then a mutation is likely to be the cause.

Have a look at the leaves of the oldest sucker, and see if they are affected too. If they are normal then it is likely that the 'mother' plant has a genetic abnormality. If it too is affected, we will have to think again!

Let us know how you go
grahame

The Dwarf Brazilian variety showed leaf deformation in Palau under conditions of waterlogged soil.  I don't know if this is similar to what you are seeing. I attach two photos

Dear Grahame and Joel

Thank you for the comment/suggestions. I have to visit the site myself to observe and ask the questions.

Yes, the Mother plant is healthy and the place was once waterlogged. I have asked the farmer to uproot the few suckers affected since they have not produced bunches.
