Request for weed identification, Papua New Guinea
Pestnet

I would appreciate very much a species name for this weed. We find this around the Markham valley, Papua New Guinea.

Hi Grahame & Lastus

Thanks for circulating the actual images Grahame!

The plant in Lastus’ images is a species of Desmanthus (Fabaceae – Mimosoideae), almost certainly Desmanthus pernambucanus. It is most likely a pastoral introduction (similar to but a lot smaller than Leucaena leucocephala), and as apparent from the images has high seed production. The seeds are a good size for being spread around by vehicles and farming equipment.

I identified it from images taken in the Erap area near Lae several years ago, when Russell Hunt was still managing the Trukai Farm there, and earlier this year observed a couple of plants on Daru (Western Province). It appears to have a wide distribution in the Pacific including the Solomon Islands.

Regards and best wishes
