Science

Earthworms and their marine cousins, bloodworms, can look a lot alike. So much so that if you grab a container of bait worms from a tackle shop, you’d be forgiven for not knowing whether they came from soil or muddy seabed. But you’d scarcely …

Honeybees are social insects. Their colony only survives as a community, and healthy new generations are very important. It is therefore not surprising that honeybees invest significant care and resources into their offspring: nurse bees feed the …

A proposed model of how StFC-II was manipulated by RxLR effector Pi22922 to suppress host imunitiy. Phytophthora infestans RxLR effector Pi22922 was secreted from haustoria and translocated in the nucleus and cytoplasm. In cytoplasm, Pi22922 targeted the chloroplast protein StFC-II and inhibited its degradation mediated by E3 ubiquitin ligase CHIP, thereby promoting its accumulation in chloroplasts. Much StFC-II accumulation in the chloroplast disrupts the subtle balance of chlorophyll and heme biosynthesis, which leads to decreased cROS and cytoplasm ROS production and inhibition of the defense-related genes' expression. Pi22922 may also target host nuclear-located proteins to simultaneously suppress immunity. Credit: Horticulture Research

An often-overlooked component of natural and human-driven disasters is their potential to affect plant health and thus food security at domestic and international scales. Most disasters have indirect …
